[LINKED] GameSpot: Interview with Stephen Jarrett, creative lead on ‘Crash Bandicoot: On the Run’ (Mr. Crumb confirmed)

Crash is coming back with a new console game, Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, but that’s not the only new appearance from the long-dormant wacky mascot. Crash Bandicoot: On the Run is a mobile runner that adapts the familiar platformer gameplay into a mobile runner from King.

The announcement notes that this Crash game adds elements like crafting and base-building, with plenty of references to classic environments, characters, and bosses. The story revolves around Dr. Neo Cortex taking control of the multiverse, allowing for classic stages like Temple Ruins, Turtle Woods, and Bear It.

The game is coming to iOS and Android devices, but in the meantime you can pre-register through the official site to unlock a Blue Hyena skin from Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled.

GameSpot spoke with Stephen Jarrett, creative lead of Crash Bandicoot: On The Run, about how the studio stayed true to Crash’s legacy and its plans to support it long term.

Before thousands of fans, he talked about a long list of Sony games, but he didn’t say anything about a Crash Bandicoot game.

[LINKED] VentureBeat: Interview with Paul Yan on “Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time” (Development, and more!)

Activision Publishing announced today that the all-new Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time is coming to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 2. Toys for Bob, the Activision-owned studio that previously worked on the Skylanders titles and the Spyro Reignited trilogy remake, is working on the game, which is sure to excite Crash fans who haven’t had a brand-new title in 12 years. Preorders are available now.

[…] Toys For Bob started its work on the title after the completion of the trilogy remake in mid-2017.

Early on, Toys For Bob consulted with Activision’s Taylor Kurosaki, a former Naughty Dog developer now at Activision’s Infinity Ward, to get grounded in the Crash franchise. Beyond that, Toys For Bob had a lot of superfans at its studio. Toys For Bob also contributed some work to both the N. Sane trilogy and Crash Team Racing.

[LINKED] Engadget: Interview with Paul Yan on “Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time” (Unreal Engine)

Three years after Activision revived Crash Bandicoot with updated versions of the original three games, the orange critter is back with his first brand new adventure since 2008. Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time (get it?) is a direct sequel to that PlayStation 1 trilogy, forgoing The Wrath of Cortex and all of the other main-series games since then.

[…] One of the main issues some people (including this writer) had with the N. Sane Trilogy was that the platforming often felt unfair. Vicarious Visions, the developer behind the remake, actually made the games even more difficult than the already-tough originals by updating the jumping mechanics and collision detection. Toys For Bob had a relatively blank slate, however. For one thing, Crash 4 uses Unreal rather than Vicarious’ own Alchemy Engine, and it’s “built from the ground up for a new game,” Yan said.
