EDIT: Turns out that the answer could probably be a “yes” to whatever Vicarious Visions is developing, it certainly isn’t for the remake of Crash Team Racing developed by Beenox. Let’s move the goal post to 2020…
Short answer without having to read the article: Yes, most likely.
Long answer: As we all know, Toys for Bob has currently two projects that utilize the Unreal Engine 4 as its base game engine, Spyro Reignited Trilogy and an unannounced multiplayer game that’s assumed to be still in the works. The question is will the next Crash Bandicoot project that’s staled for 2019 use the engine? There’s not much evidence to be found in job openings as of yet since they’re also working heavily with Bungie on Destiny 2 and should help with the move to the engine, but a clue from Vicarious Visions tells a different story.
Benny, a Software Engineer at the company, posted this picture on Instagram all the way back in October 2016 of this shirt that shows the fall of the Alchemy logo as a monolithic floating object falling into its demise at water level with a warrior looking at it on the left, captioned “Farewell Alchemy“. Vicarious Visions has recently expanded its studio adding 115 jobs, investing $7.3 million around August and recently posted two job openings looking for employees with experience on multiplayer games around an “Exciting new project“ and has assisted Toys for Bob on its development on Spyro Reignited Trilogy (not unusual for either of the studios as they consistently kept a close eye helping each other since Skylanders).
One thing to keep in mind is that Skylanders 7 was cancelled in light of the recent sales slump of Skylanders Imaginators at the company, perhaps putting the nail in the coffin for the Alchemy Engine even further for a new title other than Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, which came out on June 30, 2017 on the PS4 and June 29, 2018 on the Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. On top of this, the team that worked on it was small (around 40 out of 200+ employees, around 18 months) and had to get the game out quickly, hence the rough aspects rearing its ugly head and the refusal of commitment to patching out a few other things as well.
The good news is that NST did incredibly well and people shouldn’t worry about this, as sales have been last estimated by ZhugeEX on the PS4 release to have reached around 3-4 million copies as of late 2017 alone, so its safe to assume that with multiplatform combined, the game has now reached 4-5 million sales in total around the world. And Activision has recently updated the two trademarks for a 3rd extension, the 2nd of its kind for this year alone, the other being in April during the multiplatform hype.
In conclusion, although direct evidence where they explicitly say that they are looking for people to hire where they have Unreal Engine experience is not available at the moment, it is safe to assume that they going to utilize the engine since they usually work closely with Toys for Bob on a lot of things including Crash Bandicoot (Development assistance, Switch port, etc).
