Joe Pearson: Coco Bandicoot Model Sheets (Practice)

One of the commissions I recently picked up on from Crash fans involved a drawing of both Crash and his little sister, COCO. Which was a bit of a challenge. While I was involved in designing a lot of the characters and environments in the first game, I walked away from the Franchise for a long time after that and did not work on the next 3 games.

So I’ve never had the occasion to actually DRAW Coco! Naturally, when I needed the best model of the she bandicoot I went to the “fountainhead” of her design, the model sheets done by my colleague and dear friend, the great Charles Zimballis. Charles’ original model sheets for Coco are just wonderful and really inspiring to study and learn from.

But his proportions on Coco are really interesting. Her eyes and forehead are HUGE and if you don’t get them just right the result is going to look “off”. So I spent a half hour last night just drawing her head from Charles models and doing an analysis of her proportions and design.

It’s a great way to learn and expand your artist chops, even for an old dog like me. 🙂
