The Game Informer Show “Creating the Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy” with Dan and Kara

In this interview from The Game Informer Show, Ben Hanson interviews producer Kara Massie and game director Dan Tanguay from Vicarious Visions about the technical and creative details of remaking Naughty Dog’s Crash Bandicoot, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, and Crash Bandicoot: Warped within the Skylanders engine with the N. Sane Trilogy releasing in 2017.

Highlights from the interview:

  • They are fixing controls (They gave an example for the Jetpack with shoulder buttons and Y Axis Inverting), while keeping the old school controls as well with Analog support and all that jazz
  • You can hold a button to speed up the crate dropping speed in the results screen for Crash Bandicoot 1, alongside the teasing of “new animations”
  • They have scoured the internet for a lot of resources to use, including fanmade ones during pre-production
  • They have thought of putting a gallery for concept art and other stuff but didn’t say if they are committing 100 percent to it “we can’t commit to anything”
  • They have been studying from playing the games, looking at the videos, resources, concept arts, a ton of things
  • Alchemy is being used but the artstyle is heavily adjusted for the Crash universe (obviously)
  • They are going for references beyond Crash, Looney Tunes, Taz, etc.
  • They said that while doing the Skylanders content or before it, they were specifically approached to remake/remaster the games (nothing about a new game, obviously they can’t say anything about that)
  • It’s brought up that VV are indeed constantly working on multiple areas of the game at the same time and reiterating on them until they’re happy with the result (For example: Checkpoints in Crash Bandicoot 1)
  • Also, they don’t have the original code from Naughty Dog and have gotten the levels data from Sony via Activision
  • They are obviously scouring a lot of places online like Reddit, NeoGAF and YouTube (Those are the mentioned ones in the video)
  • Pinstripe is the Potoroo in the cage! (They joked about Papu Papu being caged)
  • It also seems according to Dan (don’t take his word for it though he says that in the video) they might’ve approached Clancy about voicing Cortex
  • They got asked about DLC/Big Content/Major changes, they were like: we might do some major announcements “To be announced” (Doesn’t seem that they are doing DLC but they aren’t ruling that out, as Kara says)
  • Got asked about “Rights Issues” and said that both Activision and Sony have arranged for the revival of Crash Bandicoot (There was no actual issue but there is confusion/misconception among many)
  •  There will be cutscenes for the bosses in the trilogy remake, on top of the extended ones for the intro/outro of the games
